Systems (and Software) Safety Engineer

Due to an increase in volume of work from new contracts and supporting continued growth, Stirling Dynamics is looking for a Systems (and Software) Safety Engineer on a consultancy or contract basis for aerospace and marine equipment programmes.

The ideal candidate would be able to lead all systems software safety engineering activities of the business within the aerospace and marine environments from safety planning to safety case development. The candidate will bring a wealth of experience in actively delivering safe systems within the overall equipment programme. It is essential the candidate has a thorough understanding of applied safety engineering and assurance from one of the main perspectives: functional safety (through IEC61508) or SAE processes (through ARP 4754 DO-254/DO-178B/C) or other equivalent guidelines and standards (e.g. Nuclear, Rail or Space).

Working across our aerospace and marine systems programmes, the ideal candidate will be flexible, willing to learn and value a changing environment. An experienced operator who can lead safety programmes of work and represent the safety endeavour to Independent Safety Auditors (ISA), safety authorities and internal stakeholders.

This role is based in our Clifton office (moving to North Bristol, December 2019) and may require occasional trips to customer sites in the UK or internationally. The candidate must be willing to undergo and obtain UK Security Clearance.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) across the business in systems & software safety
  • Be a key part of a systems and safety engineering team across multiple programmes
  • Act as the principal point of contact for safety related matters on allocated projects
  • Develop safety processes and regimes on allocated projects and oversee operation
  • Derive safety requirements within the required safety regimes
  • Take responsibility for ensuring safety requirements are assessed and evidenced
  • Be willing to travel and engage with Independent Safety Auditor (ISA) and safety authorities
  • Promote within the project environment adherence to safety, quality and standards, including those issued via the Company’s Quality Management System, classifications and statutory bodies

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s Degree qualified in a STEM subject of relevance (Master’s degree or PhD preferred)
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a safety-related discipline in the aerospace or defence industries
  • Evidence of attendance and completion of safety related course(s) of study or professional development
  • Thorough understanding of applied safety engineering and assurance from one of the main perspectives: functional safety (through IEC61508) or SAE processes (through ARP 4754 DO-254/DO-178B/C) or other equivalent guidelines and standards (e.g. Nuclear, Rail or Space).
  • The candidate will understand or be able to conduct (no expectation of demonstrable experience in all methods): Safety Management Planning, Safety Reviews, Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) assessments, Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSA), System Safety Assessments (SSA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Common Cause Analysis (CCA), Software (specific) Hazard Analysis (SHA), Goal Structured Notation (GSN), Safety Case (development) and Report (SCR).
  • Proven experience of working within DEF-STAN 00-56 mandated environment (highly desirable)
  • Practical experience assuring safety within the systems “V-Model” lifecycle
  • Experience in writing safety documentation across the lifecycle from planning to safety case reports
  • Awareness of product Configuration Management (CM) and its application to the product
  • Understanding of the constraints of operating within the aerospace and marine domain
  • Exposure to DOORS for requirements management and computer aided safety tooling (e.g. FaultTree+)
